GMB along with our sister Trade Unions UNISON and UNITE are taking strike action on the 10th July. In relation to the strike action. Click here for a document answering some Frequently Asked Questions. If you have any further questions that are not answered there please feel free to contact me on the number below.
GMB members in Schools, Academies and centrally employed, (e.g. Waste and Recycling, Parks, Children’s Service, Adults etc), are entitled to strike. Colleagues from these groups who are not members of a union and wish to strike can join GMB before or on the day of the Strike to ensure they are protected.
Please remember you are under no obligation to tell your employer whether or not you plan to strike. Head Teachers and Managers may ask you this but you do not need to give an answer. Even if you have already said you will not be striking you can change your mind and not turn up on the day.
GMB members from Barnet Homes and other contractors e.g. NSL, OCS, CAPITA are not automatically included in the action as they have not been balloted. If any members in this group do not wish to cross a picket line they should contact their manager to inform them of this and contact their Branch if they have any further concerns.
In addition to GMB and the other Local Government unions; NUT the Teachers union, PCS the civil service union and FBU the Fire Brigade Union are all taking coordinated strike action on the same day. This will make this one of the biggest Strikes in recent history.
This is as a result of Public Sector Workers saying we have had enough of being the scapegoats for the mess the financial sector got us all into, and taking the brunt of the Austerity measures. It is our time to stand up and fight for Fair Pay, Fair Workloads and Fair Pensions.
On the day of action there will be picket lines at Barnet House, Mill Hill Depot and North London Business Park. If anyone wants to volunteer to take part in one of the pickets, even if it is only for an hour, please contact your Branch so we can advise you of arrangements. Anyone wishing to establish a picket line at their workplace e.g. a school please let us know as soon as possible so notification can be given and arrangements put in place.
Those who are unable to attend, or do not want to join a picket line can attend the March and Rally of the joint unions which will take place in London from 11.30am. Details of the march and assembly point are in the flier here.
Thankyou in advance for your support on what will be a momentous day of action.
